His parents, Lakshmana and Gangamuthai, instilled in him values of discipline and service. He is married to Gyaneshwari, a homemaker, and the couple has two children – Aadvi and Siddhartha.
He completed his B.Sc. in Agriculture from Agri College, Mandya, followed by an M.Sc. in Agriculture from Allahabad Agriculture, Allahabad. He further earned a Ph.D. in Plant Physiology from the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), New Delhi.
